From its beautiful mountains to its hidden beaches, Portugal is full of delicious cuisine. But did you know that some Portuguese dishes can actually improve your skin? Certain dishes are packed with antioxidants that can clear skin of acne, diminish wrinkles, and prevent signs of aging. If you want flawless, glowing skin, add these dishes to your diet.

The traditional soup dish, caldo verde is typically made with potatoes, kale, and olive oil – all ingredients that do wonders for the skin.

Potatoes are rich in Vitamin C, which is essential for skin health. It helps the removal of dark circles under the eyes, and works as an anti-aging formula. Regular intake of potatoes can help prevent wrinkles.

Kale is good for achieving your daily dose of Vitamin A. Vitamin A promotes cell growth in the dermis and epidermis layers of the skin, and replaces dead skin with healthier cell. Kale also has skin-friendly copper minerals, which increases melanin, a defender for your skin against the sun.

Olive oil creates youthful skin. A study showed that people that consume more olive oil show 31 percent fewer signs of aging.
However, to make sure that you’re promoting good skin growth, you should limit the amount of salt used in preparing caldo verde. Some dishes also add chorizo to the dish; however, sausages like chorizo should be avoided if you want to have health, glowing skin.

Fresh cod

This fish dish provides omega-3 fats, which can prevent acne. The cod can also strengthen the membrane of skin cells and prevent damage by the sun. However, the fish should be prepared with no salt, such as in fresh cod. Here are some other ingredients you can add to the dish to further increase skin benefits:

Tomatoes; this juicy, red ingredient can be added as puree to give the fish more flavor. Not only can it make the fish tastier, but tomatoes act as a natural SPF and protects skin from the sun.

Garlic; you can add garlic cloves to your tomato puree or sauce to add an extra zest of flavor. Garlic has anti-fungal and anti-aging properties that can reduce breakouts and increase blood flow to the skin, for a natural glow.

For dessert, try the sweet rice recipe for a sweet, yet skin-healthy treat. The nutrients in rice are known to shrink pores and brighten the skin. However, when making Arroz Doce, you should substitute sugar for stevia or raw honey, which are both natural sweeteners that are better for your skin.

These three dishes are delicious and skin-healthy. You can enjoy what you eat, while still working towards the flawless, gorgeous skin of your dreams.
