Meat with puree in the oven is always a good choice for a family lunch. It’s comforting and delicious…

Units: Metric / (Units: US)

Ingredients

  • 600 g / (1 1/3 pounds) beef
  • 50 g / (1 3/4 ounces) Portugese chorizo
  • 2 medium onions
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 50 ml / (3 1/3 tablespoons) olive oil
  • 2 egg yolks
  • Pepper (to taste)
  • 150 g / (5 1/3 ounces) raw bacon cut into pieces
  • Salt (to taste)
  • For the puree:
  • 1.3 kg / (about 3 pounds) potatoes
  • 10 grams / (1/3 ounce) margarine
  • Pepper (to taste)
  • Juice of one lemon
  • Nutmeg (to taste)
  • 400 ml / (1 2/3 cups) milk
  • Salt (to taste)

    Directions

    Step 1


    1. Peel the skin off of the chorizo. Place the meat, chorizo and the raw bacon cut into pieces in a saucepan with water seasoned with salt and bring to a boil over high heat. When starts boiling, reduce to medium-low heat and cook about 35 to 40 minutes. When the meats are cooked, drain them and reserve the meat broth.

    Step 2


    1. Cut the meat into pieces and the chorizo into slices. Place the meat, the chorizo and the raw bacon in a food processor and pulse until well chopped.

    Step 3


    1. Place the olive oil, the chopped onion and the chopped garlics in a saucepan and saute over low heat until the onion starts to turn golden brown. Then, add the minced meat together with some pepper, one egg yolk and 200 ml / (3/4 cup and 1 1/2 tablespoons) of the meat broth. Stir and simmer about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

    Step 4


    1. For the puree:
    2. Peel, wash the potatoes and place them in a saucepan with water seasoned with salt. Bring to a boil over high heat. When starts boiling, reduce to medium heat and cook about 25 minutes. When the potatoes are cooked, drain them and mash the potatoes with a potato masher. Add the margarine, nutmeg, pepper, lemon juice and the milk. Bring over low heat and stir well. When starts bubbling turn off the heat.

    Step 5


    1. Preheat the oven to 180ºC / (350ºF). In a rectangular baking dish, place a layer of mashed potato, on top the minced meat and finally, another layer of mashed potato. Brush with egg yolk and bake about 20 to 25 minutes until golden.

    Step 6


    1. Remove from oven and serve.
