  • 350 grams (12 1/3 ounces) canned tuna
  • 1 kg (2 1/4 pounds) potatoes
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 medium ripe tomatoes
  • 50 ml (1/4 cup) olive oil
  • Pepper (to taste)
  • Nutmeg (to taste)
  • Oregano (to taste)
  • 200 ml (1/2 pint (236 ml)) whipping cream
  • 100 grams (3 1/2 ounces) grated cheese
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • For the béchamel sauce:

  • 200 ml (about 1 cup) milk
  • 2 tablespoons corn starch flour
  • 1/2 tablespoon butter
  • Pepper (to taste)
  • Nutmeg (to taste)
  • Salt (to taste)


  1. For the béchamel sauce:
    Place the butter in a saucepan and heat over low heat. When the butter start to melt, add the flour with a little milk and whisk until the flour is dissolved. Gradually add the rest of the milk, increase to medium heat and stir until a homogeneous and creamy mixture, about 10 minutes.
  2. Turn off the heat and season with a little salt, pepper and nutmeg. Mix the seasonings in the sauce and let cool. Béchamel sauce recipe.
  3. Cook the eggs in a saucepan with water. When the eggs are cooked, peel them and set aside.
  4. Peel and wash the potatoes. Cut them into round slices and fry in hot oil. When they are fried, place the potatoes in a dish with absorbent paper.
  5. Meanwhile, shred the tuna with a fork and set aside. Place the olive oil, chopped onion, the peeled tomatoes cut into small pieces and the oregano in a saucepan and cook over low heat until the tomato start to break down, stirring occasionally. Add the tuna and season with pepper. Stir and cook for about 4 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Preheat the oven to 180ºC (350ºF).
  7. In a bowl, mix with a fork the béchamel, the cream and the nutmeg.
  8. Place on the bottom of a baking dish a layer of potatoes, on top, the tuna mixtureA layer of potatoes and a layer of tuna mixture on a baking dish and one more layer of potatoes.   9. Turn off the oven and serve with salad.
