INGREDIENTS FOR TUNA RICE

Here you'll find all the ingredients needed to make this recipe:

  • Long-grain rice - In this recipe we use long grain rice but you can also use medium grain rice. Long grain rice is looser while medium grain rice is creamier and absorbs all the flavors.
  • Olive oil, chopped onion, chopped garlic and bay leaf - To sauté and flavor.
  • Pepper - For seasoning the canned tuna.
  • Canned tuna - Flaked tuna.
  • Grated cheese (mozzarella or Parmesan) - Adds flavor and creaminess to the rice.
  • Salt - Highlights all the other flavors.

HOW TO MAKE EASY TUNA RICE

Step 1: Drain the tuna and flake it with a fork; set aside.

Step 2: In a large saucepan, add the olive oil, the chopped onion, the chopped garlic and the bay leaf. Sauté over low heat until the onion start to turn slightly golden. Remove the bay leaf, add the tuna and season with a little salt and pepper. Stir and cook for about 3 to 4 minutes.

Step 3: Add the rice, stir and pour the water (about 600 ml (2 1/2 cups). Boil over medium-high heat. When starts boiling, reduce to low heat and cook the rice for about 10 to 12 minutes.

Step 4: When the rice is almost cooked, add the grated cheese and mix in the rice and tuna. Turn off the heat, season with a little more pepper and serve.

TIPS FOR COOKING RICE

1. After the rice is cooked, turn off the heat, cover de pan and let the rice rest for about 5 minutes.

2. We usually use long-grain rice or medium-grain rice but you can use another type of rice. Long-grain rice is looser while medium-grain rice is creamier and absorb much more the flavors.

3. The amount of water for the rice depends on each person's taste. The mesure we usually use is 250 ml (about 1 cup) to 300 ml (1 1/3 cups) of water per 100 grams (1/2 cup) rice.

4. Always cook the rice with a lid and over low heat to prevent the rice from burning and sticking to the bottom of the pan.

How long does it takes to cook rice?
The cooking time for rice may vary depending on the type of rice and cooking method. For long grain rice, 10 to 12 minutes and about 13 to 15 minutes for medium grain rice.

Note: The cooking time is after boiling. After boiling, cook the rice over low heat.

Can I replace canned tuna with sausages?
